Focus on Flood Mapping Technology

Flood mapping is an important aspect of flood risk management.

Flood hazard map predicts the  expected water depths of an area flooded. The analysis is done in three different perspectives namely, a low/medium, high probability or extreme scenario. Flood Mapping Technology has applications in Near Real Time Flood Mapping and Monitoring, Flood Damage Assessment, Flood Hazard Zone Mapping, River Bank Erosion Mapping, Mapping changes in the river course.

The main components of near real time flood mapping and monitoring involves  Flood watch, Satellite data planning and acquisition,  Satellite data analysis,  Product generation & Dissemination.  Through a combination of remote sensing and GIS techniques observation and ground sensors, the monitoring of the water levels of rivers is done in real time. The analysis of the data helps to estimate the flood risk in the particular geographical area.

The application of remote sensing & GIS techniques is elaborated in a research work entitled “Integration of Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques for Flood Monitoring and Damage Assessment: A Case Study of Naogaon District, Bangladesh” by Abdullah-Al Faisal and his team, published by Journal of Remote Sensing & GIS.
