Survey of Ageing

Ageing or aging is the process of becoming older. In humans, ageing represents the accumulation of changes. Mortality can be used to define biological ageing, which refers to an organism's increased rate of death as it progresses throughout its lifecycle and increases its chronological age. The rate of ageing varies substantially across different species, and this, to a large extent, is genetically based.

The causes of ageing are uncertain current theories are assigned to the damage concept, whereby the accumulation of damage (such as) may cause biological systems to fail, or to the programmed ageing concept, whereby problems with the internal processes may cause ageing. Old age comprises "the later part of life; the period of life after youth and middle age usually with reference to deterioration". At what age old age begins cannot be universally defined because it differs according to the context. The United Nations has agreed that 65+ years may be usually denoted as old age and this is the first attempt at an international definition of old age.

Age and aging is an open access journal, and it is peer review process. The age which qualifies for senior citizen status varies widely. Population ageing is a shift in the distribution of a country's population towards older ages. This is usually reflected in an increase in the population's mean and media ages, a decline in the proportion of the population composed of children, and a rise in the proportion of the population composed of elderly. Population ageing is widespread across the world. It is most advanced in the most highly developed countries, but it is growing faster in less developed regions, which means that older persons will be increasingly concentrated in the less developed regions of the world.
